Richard L. Calder, III, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 3, 2011. He was the loving husband of Pierrette (Besnier) Calder for 51 years. Born May 2, 1940 in Torrington, CT; the son of the late Richard L. Calder, II and Gladys (Sekulski) Clark and Harry Clark. Rich served in the United States AirForce during Vietnam as an Officer’s Club Manager and continued his military career for 30 years traveling to France, New Mexico, Germany, Spain, Turkey and all throughout the United States. He met his beautiful wife when he was stationed in France. Rich later returned to New Hartford in the late 1970s, where he worked various jobs until becoming a Food and Beverage Inspector for the State of Connecticut retiring after 15 years. In those early years, he ran for State Representative in this district. He has continued to be involved in his community volunteering for the New Hartford Ambulance as an E.M.T.I. as well as the South End Fire Department Fire/Police for over 30 years. He also hosted many fundraising events for the community recently raising money for a wounded soldier returning from Iraq. Rich was the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus achieving the highest Fourth Degree and was a dedicated communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. His zest for life included his love of food, cars and earning his Pilot’s license. Rich also became a Justice of the Peace happily celebrating with many couples. For the past ten years, he was an integral and irreplaceable part of Montano-Shea Funeral Home both inside and out and will be sorely missed everyday. His unique character, sense of humor and brimming self confidence were a true rarity. Rich’s strong love of his country, his family and God were not only honorable but incomparable. In addition to the love of his life, “Mo,” he leaves his son, Richard L. Calder, IV of Bristol; his pride and joys, granddaughter, Alexis Calder of North Carolina, grandson, Richard L. Calder, V of Bristol and great grandson, Fredrick Calder of North Carolina; and his close brother-in-law, Claude Besnier of France. He also leaves his siblings, Joanne Lidington and her husband Butch of New Hartford, Kathy Pridgen of RI, Susan Wilcox and her husband Bud of Barkhamsted, Gail Olsen and her husband Charles of Torrington, Harry Clark and his partner Joe Collins of CA and Julie Schultz and her husband Dave of Torrington; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Church, New Hartford at 12 PM. Friends may call on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Church, New Hartford from 6 – 8 PM. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford has care of the arrangements.
