Helen Bruno Simmons

Helen Bruno Simmons passed away peacefully on March 17, 2017 at the home of her daughter in Eugene, OR. Helen was the widow of Richard D. Simmons who predeceased her in 1995. Helen was born in Winsted Sept. 7, 1918; daughter of Dominic and Rosa (Cacchio) Bruno.

A lifelong resident of Winsted, CT; she graduated from the Gilbert School in 1936. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, McCarthy Senior Center, the Italian American Women's Club, and Director of the Auxiliary for the Community Health Center. Always interested in volunteering, she graduated from the first Red Cross Nurses' Aide course in Winsted in 1942 and volunteered many hours to the former Litchfield County Hospital and Winsted Memorial Hospital, Winsted Health Center and Auxiliary Thrift Shop over 72 years. She was an avid golfer and past member of the Greenwoods Country Club and the Clinton Country Club Women's' Golf Association and CT Women's' Golf Association. Helen loved a good time, knitting, reading, UCONN Basketball, bingo and cards.

Helen was predeceased by her parents and five brothers, Carmine Bruno, Joseph Bruno, Anthony Bruno, Carmen Bruno and Dominic "Nonnie" Bruno; four sisters, Jeannette Blasette, Lucy Buttafuso, Rose Vincent and Louise Ciriello; and a great grandson Daniel Bottass.

She is survived by her son, Richard E. Simmons and his wife Betty of Summerfield, FL; a daughter, Helene Reilly and her husband William of Eugene, OR.; 5 grandchildren, Richard and Jennifer Simmons of Turner, ME, Sandra Simmons of Granby, CT, Michael and Kristine Simmons of Canaan, CT, Tara Reilly of Oakland, CA and Shannon and Carrie Reilly of Eugene, OR.; and 8 great grandchildren, Joseph and Michael Bottass of Canaan, CT, Allison and Tyler Simmons of Turner, ME, Owen and Levi Simmons of Canaan, CT, and McKayla and Quinlan Reilly of Eugene, OR. Helen is also survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a special place in her heart for Ruthann Horvay, Joann Albrecht, Rachel Vincent, Barbara Reilly, the Groppo and Smith families, Evelyn Cornelio, Eleanor Lefebvre, Brenda Buccheri, Arthur Sampson and all her friends at the Glen who watched over and loved her.

Friends may call on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted, CT from 4 – 6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at St. Joseph's Church, Winsted at 10 AM. Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Winsted in the spring.
