SCHLAPAK – Mary Schlapak, of 38 Riverton Rd., died peacefully in her home on April 16, 2012 after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of the late Henry Schlapak who died in 1974. Born August 19, 1916 in Unionville, CT; she was the fourth of 14 children born to the late Rena (Haller) and Leo Peltier. She graduated from Farmington High School in 1935 and worked as a telephone operator before her marriage. She moved to Riverton in 1938 where she lived until her death. She retired from Hitchcock Chair Company in 1980 after working in their Riverton retail store for 22 years. In 1959, when the Ladies Auxiliary of the Riverton Fire District was formed, she became its first President. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, knitting, reading and watching her favorite team, the Boston Red Sox. She is survived by one daughter, Elaine Schlapak of Riverton; one brother, Donald Peltier of Unionville; two sisters, Anita Dubnanski of Terryville and Dorothy Thibodeau of St. Petersburg, FL; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by nine brothers, Leo Jr., Eugene, Richard, William, Elliot, Leo, Paul, Raymond, Alfred and one sister, Leona Ransom. A private burial service will be held at the Riverton Cemetery. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted has care of the arrangements.
