Dr. Roy B. Sherman of Winsted, CT passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 13th, on his 83rd Birthday. He lived a long and fulfilling life, enjoying his loving children up until the day of his passing.
He was the son of an oyster boat fisherman and never forgot his roots. Schooling: B.A. Brown University Class of 1951 Sigma Nu Fraternity M.D. Yale School of Medicine Class of 1958 Military Service:
Lieutenant (junior grade) U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team: served on the battleship USS Iowa and the destroyer USS Kyne
Professional: M.D. -Yale University School of Medicine 1954-1958 Internship - Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor Maine -1958-1959 Residency in Anesthesiology - Yale Medical Center (now Yale-New Haven) 1959-1961 Instructor in Anesthesiology - Yale Medical Center 1961-1962 Staff Anesthesiologist and Medical Director of Inhalation Therapy - New Britain General Hospital 1962 Board Certified in Anesthesiology Director of Anesthesiology - Winsted Memorial Hospital Charlotte Hungerford Hospital until his retirement Dr. Sherman led in teaching resuscitation in all the communities that he resided in and never lost his passion for helping others. Family: Predeceased by: his parents, Leroy Benson Sherman and Marie Matilda Lichtenberger as well as stepmother, Helen Andersen; and his brother, Andrew Andersen and his former wife, Carolyn Andy.
Roy is survived by his Sister Joyce Mozesky of Navarre, FL and his Brother George Sherman of East Harwich, MA. He was the proud father of eleven children: Roy Benson Sherman, Jr. of Holyoke, MA, Linda Sherman Marie Driscoll of New Hartford, CT; Michael Gentry Sherman of New Hartford, CT; Lisa Traynor (Sherman) Phillips of New Hartford, CT; Laura Hamilton (Sherman) Giardello of Branford, CT; Mark Hamilton Sherman of South Hadley, MA; Richard Benson Sherman of Silver Spring, MD; Robert Hamilton Sherman of New York, NY; Jenny Lynn Sherman of Boston, MA; Jon Hamilton Sherman of Winsted, CT; and Amanda Ashley Sherman of Winsted, CT. All of his children are particularly thankful for Jon and Amanda's loving care of their father over the past few years.
His Former Wives: Carolyn Andy; Brenda Greb-Lasky and Elizabeth Gentry His grandchildren in order of birth: Meghan Driscoll; Jason Giardello; David Driscoll; Callie Rose Giardello; William Reilly Sherman; Seth Phillips; and Jimmy Phillips. He was an engaged grandpa and father who took an interest in each of their lives, especially if it offered an opportunity to pass along a book. His passion for learning was with him throughout his life. He was also an avid tennis player until the age of 73 while holding his own on the court with people 30 years younger than him. He loved the Norfolk and Litchfield road races which he ran with his children.
Friends may call on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 3 – 5 PM followed by full Military Honors.
